Professional experience

Ignace Claeys is a partner at the Belgian law firm Eubelius in Brussels. He is heading a team specialized in commercial litigation and arbitration (mainly ad hoc, Cepani and ICC). He has experience in a vast array of industries in national and cross-border matters (such as energy and oil, real estate, infrastructure and construction, chemicals and pharma, banking, investment and insurance, retail, food, automotive and airplanes, distribution and manufacturing, waste, telecom, professional liability, etc.). His clients include Belgian and multinational clients as well as Belgian and foreign public authorities. He has been acting as counsel to claimants and respondents, as legal expert and as arbitrator. He also stays on top of things through his part-time academic position. After having studied in Leuven (Ph.D.), Germany (DAAD) and the US (University of Chicago), he has been teaching the basic and advanced courses on the law of obligations (mainly contracts) as professor at the law faculty of the University of Gent for over 20 years now. His list of publications on contract and tort law include a 2023 treatise (written together with Thijs Tanghe) on the general law of contract under the new Civil Code. His main goal is to simplify the understanding of the complexities of reality, share this understanding with others, and engage in discussions about it.
