Olivier van der Haegen is Partner at Loyens & Loeff (Brussels office) where he co-heads the international arbitration and litigation practice.Olivier is an expert in national and international arbitration. He represents clients in arbitration proceedings, either ad hoc or under different institutional rules (ICC, Cepani, LCIA, DIS, UNCITRAL). He is most active in the real estate, construction, energy, and media industries.
Olivier also regularly sits as an arbitrator, mostly under the ICC and Cepani Rules.
His recent activities as counsel include the representation of:
• Foreign investors in Belgian enforcement or annulment proceedings of major investment-treaty awards (UNCITRAL and ICSID) against sovereign States;
• Real estate developers in post-M&A Cepani and ICC arbitrations (seats in Brussels and Luxembourg);
• A credit insurance company and a world leading energy company in ICC arbitration against an African employer (seat in Paris);
• A Belgian leading energy company in several ICC arbitrations in relation to infrastructure projects abroad.
Olivier publishes on international arbitration, civil procedure and private international law. He has co-authored the Belgian chapter of the GAR Know How Guide on Challenging and Enforcing Arbitration Awards and contributed to the book International Arbitration and EU Law (Edward Elgar Publishing, 2021 and 2024).
He is a member of the Brussels Bar, the International Arbitration Institute (IAI), the CEPANI (the Belgian arbitration institution), and the Swiss Arbitration Institution (ASA).
